Overview

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work with children between the ages of 0-5 years. You will study, child development, children’s health and well-being, safe environments, child health, play and learning, additional needs and observation, assessment and planning in the first year. 

In the second year you will undertake units comprising of, literacy, mathematics, school readiness, international perspectives, reflective practice and professional partnerships. Throughout both first and second year you will undertake placements across three age ranges to complete 750 hours in placement as well as create a professional practice portfolio.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved five GCSE’s at grade 4/5 (C) or above, including English and Maths plus 2 suitable references. You will be required to complete a satisfactory Enhanced Disclose and Barring Service (DBS check). School leavers are not able to apply for this course.

You will be continuously assessed through assessor observation, reflective account, case studies professional discussion, written questions, oral questions, written assignments and tasks.

A professional skills portfolio will be completed in year 2.

A graded synoptic assessment will be completed in year 1 and 2.

There will also be an externally set and externally marked assessment.

University opportunities
Past students have progressed to study degrees in early years, early childhood professional studies, education, youth, childhood and community studies, social and public sector development, childhood studies and a variety of other degrees.
Career opportunities
Career opportunities include teaching, practitioner in a day nursery, management, child-minding and youth work.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
