Overview

This one year full time qualification is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years with the relevant qualifications and experience, it will  help you to gain a wide range of specialist skills in painting and decorating so you can work as an advanced craft painter and decorator.   
This qualification is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the construction industry specifically as an advanced craftsperson in painting and decorating. It will provide you with a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or further training in painting and decorating.

Modules include:

  • You will take seven compulsory units in: • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms • Applying hangings to walls and ceilings
  • Producing specialist finishes for painted decorative work • Installing specialist architectural finishes for decorative work
  • Applying water-borne paint systems using airless equipment  • Applying water-borne paint systems using High Volume Low Pressure spray equipment.  
  • The units are designed so that you learn all the practical skills involved, as well as getting an overview of how to organise and price work. 
    As most of the work in this area means that you have to work at heights, learning how to use equipment and working platforms safely, along with erecting and dismantling them, is essential

2 Days per week, days and times confirmed upon enrolment.

Entry requirements

A Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, or equivalent industry experience.

On-going assessment will take place throughout the course with a strong emphasis on practical skills.

There are also a number of short theory tests and a multiple choice on-line exam at the end of the course.

You can progress to full time, potentially through an apprenticeship if you have an employer. You could also continue your studies into higher education to progress onto a professional management role, or move onto another Level 3 construction trade course to widen your skill set.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Level 3 Entitlement: If you are aged 19 - 23 on the start date of the course and this is your first full Level 3 qualification the course is free. For more information please contact Course Information on 01642 333333.

Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 and this is not your first full Level 3 qualification or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However,
you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. For information on

Please note any fee shown excludes any additional costs to learners for any necessary equipment, materials, uniforms or any visit/residential that learners are required to participate in.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
