This programme is designed for people who wish to retrain for a career in the catering industry and also gain practical experience to prepare for work.

Modules will include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Food Hygiene in Storage, Preparation and Cooking
  • Working Relationships
  • Handling Knives
  • Preparation and cooking of Meat- Soup- Sauces- Pasta- Poultry- Vegetables- Hot and Cold Desserts

You will also study English, maths or ICT as part of your main programme.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required but you must be able to demonstrate a serious interest in retraining for catering and a commitment to complete the course. You will also be required to attend an informal interview.

Assessment is on-going through competence based assessment.

Practical assessment will be undertaken in the RWE Kitchens and there is also a theory knowledge test which must be passed for all the units studied.

You can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances. Many people qualify for free tuition fees, for more information please contact Course Information on 01642 333333.

Level 2 Entitlement: If you are aged 19 - 23 on the start date of the course and this is your first full Level 2 qualification, the course is free if you are studying for an entry or Level 1 qualification (except Basic Skills) where a step from Basic Skills is needed in order to progress to a first full Level 2 course or this is a first full Level 2 qualification.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.

Catering and Hospitality students will have the opportunity to work in our award winning training restaurant, The Waterside Brasserie. The restaurant is open to the public across the week and all the food is prepared and served by our students in one of our five fully equipped industrial kitchens.
