Overview

The course is designed to prepare you for higher education. It consists of a range of practical and theoretical work, covering a holistic approach to sport and exercise sciences.

You will cover massage and nutrition, anatomy, physiology, sports coaching, sports injuries and sports biomechanics.

You will also cover laboratory and experimental methods in a research project related to sports science. You will also complete Fitness Instruction qualifications alongside the main programme. You can study this course for two years to achieve the Extended Diploma.

The course consists of eighteen units, both theory and practical, studied over two years including:

September - June

Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, with one day per week for work experience and/or independent study.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, which must include English language, maths and science.

You will be assessed through a variety of different methods, including assignments, presentations and practical observations. There are typically 2-3 assessments per unit and students will be awarded a pass, merit, or distinction depending on the quality of work produced.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Currently, on completion of the course students can achieve up to 168 UCAS points and progress to a sport related degree at University. Sheffield Hallam, Durham, Northumbria and Leeds Beckett are popular destinations with our learners. In the last three years over 95% of our learners achieved a high grade of DMM or above, with 40% students achieving a D*D*D*, the highest possible grade. This further confirms this course as one of the highest achieving courses at Middlesbrough College and one of the best sports courses in the country.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Sports students will learn theoretical based study in the classroom, whilst taking part in a range of sport and fitness activities. Taught by specialist tutors and coaches, many of which are ex professionals in their field, you'll benefit from fantastic facilities including an AstroTurf pitch, a strength and conditioning suite and a physiology lab.
