Overview

This course provides you with the knowledge of children from birth to 5 years and the practical experience of working with children in this age range. You will be introduced to the role of the early year’s practitioner, legislation, framework and professional practice, play, development and learning for school readiness, professional development partnerships, additional needs and safeguarding and play. You are also required to complete 250 hours of work placement in a childcare setting.


Pass/fail course. Students must achieve all criteria to pass the course.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved an appropriate Level 1 vocational qualification and /or 4 GCSEs, including English and Maths at grade 3 (D). You must have English and maths grade 3 and above plus 2 suitable references. You will be required to complete a satisfactory Enhanced Disclose and Barring Service (DBS check).

The knowledge needed to achieve this qualification and progress to a Level 3 qualification, apprenticeship or employment will be delivered in the College, you will complete practical training sessions in the Colleges child care training suite.

Practical skills and knowledge will also be leant when you are completing work placement in a childcare setting.

This programme is assessed through a number of methods including written assignments, presentations, case studies and professional discussion.

Part of the assessment is completed within a childcare setting where you will be observed by your college assessor.

English and math's is assessed via the completion of an externally marked exam.

You can progress on to a Level 3 course in a childcare programme (Grade 4 English and maths must be achieved). You could also progress to an advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship Children and Young Peoples Workforce or seek employment as a Level 2 practitioner.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
