This is a largely self-directed project where you have to take responsibility for the choice and design of an individual project, the aim being you become more critical, reflective and independent student.

You will:

  • Develop and apply decision making and problem solving skills. 
  • Learn to apply new technologies confidently.
  • Demonstrate creativity, initiative and enterprise.
  • Increase your planning, research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills.

You will have a supervisor to help guide you and attend all taught skill sessions. The course involves ninety hours of independent study for 30 weeks.

Entry requirements

You must be in the second year of a full time A Level programme. Also subject to QCA score.

If you do not have a grade 9 to 4 (A*-C) in English and/or maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your study programme.

The course is internally assessed via a 5,000 word written project or 1000 word Artefact and Artefact product.

Some universities recognise this qualification for UCAS points (20 – 70 points) but ALL recognise it as a good indication for independent learning.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
