Overview

This course concentrates on the development of knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science areas. Covering topics such as biological molecules, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system, detecting and managing disease and microbiology.

The optional unit allows the knowledge gained in year 1 to be developed and deepen the understanding of human body systems interacting in order to support body functions. From a cellular level, through to tissues and organs and organ systems.

  • 180 GLH – Equivalent to 0.5 of an A level
  • Principles of Applied Human Biology– External Exam (Mandatory Unit)
  • Practical Microbiology and Infectious Disease – Internal Assessment (Mandatory Unit)
    Year 2
  • 180 GLH – Top up to reach the equivalent of an A level
  • Human biology and health issues – External Assessment (Mandatory Unit)
  • Functional Physiology– Internal Assessment (Mandatory Unit)

On completion of all four unit’s students will leave with the equivalent of 1 A Level – BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Human Biology.

Entry requirements

  • 5 or more GCSEs (not equivalents) including English and maths at grade 5 or above.

There is an external examination in year one (1.5 hours), and an externally marked controlled assessment in year 2 and two internally assessed units, which are verified by the awarding body.

During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for University we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
