Overview

In the first year of the course students will study a mixture of underpinning anatomical and physiological knowledge exploring the structure, function of the body’s systems in response to sport and exercise. This will be assessed externally by a long and short answer exam.Students will also develop a variety of sporting techniques and coaching skills through the study of practical sports performance. This includes team and individual sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. This unit will be assessed internally via practical observations and written reports.

The second year of the course involves study of Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing which is assessed by a case study based exam. Students will investigate various methods of exercise and fitness tests, nutritional guidance and additional lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol.

Further to this the broad basis of Professional Development in the Sports Industry will be studied which covers career pathways, transferable skill development and continued professional development planning.

On completion of all four unit’s students will leave with the equivalent of 1 A Level – BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport.

  • 5 or more GCSEs (not equivalents) including English and maths at grade 5 or above.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto our foundation degrees in Sports Therapy with Rehabilitation, Strength and Conditioning and Outdoor Adventure Education and have then progressed to complete a relevant top-up degree offered at Middlesbrough College.

You can progress to a sport related degree at university or at Middlesbrough College. In the last three years over 90% of our students achieved a high grade of DMM or above, with 40% of students achieving a D*D*D*, the highest possible grade. This further confirms this course as one of the highest achieving courses at Middlesbrough College and one of the best sports courses in the country.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

You will not have to pay tuition fees if you are under 19 on 31 August in the year of your entry to the course. You must also satisfy UK / EEA residency rules. If you are over 19 or have any questions regarding residency rules, please contact (01642) 333587.
