This qualification meets the needs of learners who work in residential childcare in a care role.

This qualification will be the accepted qualification for registration and regulation where appropriate and can demonstrate continuing professional development.

Learners will cover 16 mandatory units, gaining 53 credits, which include: child development, safeguarding, communication, risk management, assessment and planning, group living, positive outcomes, positive relationships, well-being and resilience, support  learning potential, professional development, equality and diversity, teamwork.

You will choose 3 optional units gaining 8 credits, 61 credits in total are required for this diploma.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but the college must carry out an initial assessment of each learner prior to the start of the programme to ensure that they are entered for an appropriate type and level of qualification. Learners must have good literacy skills.

You will be expected to complete an English and Maths assessment prior to enrolling onto this course to ensure that your English is at the expected level to achieve.

This qualification is for those employed in children's residential social care.

You will be observed in the workplace by a college assessor who will mark your performance against the assessment criteria of the qualification/unit in which you are working towards.  Tutors/assessors will use a variety of assessment methods which will include assignment work, questions, professional discussion and reflective accounts. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.

This course will be assessed using an electronic e-portfolio.

Upon completion of this course you can progress onto the:-

Foundation Degree in Working with Children & Young People
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Residential Childcare

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Advanced Learner Loan: If you are aged 19-23 or you are aged 24 or over on the start date of the course, you will have to pay fees. However, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. You can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to fund all or part of the fee. For information on Advanced Learning Loans go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans/.

Please note any fee shown excludes any additional costs to learners for any necessary equipment, materials, uniforms or any visit/residential that learners are required to participate in.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
