Overview

This course is designed for students who are interested in developing /advancing their technical skills in painting and decorating. The course has a range of exciting content where you will have the opportunity to test your ability and advance your skills against the complex surfaces within the painting and decorating workshop. You will understand how to estimate materials and price up jobs and learn how to be competitive within the industry.

You will produce your own stencils to be incorporated into a wall of decorative effects. You will also be shown how to hang a range of wallpapers as well as all other traditional aspects of painting and decorating. Some students from the course will be chosen to represent the College at local and national skills competitions.

Tutors will support students into real life work placements that will help you to develop your understanding of what the industry is about whilst preparing you for the world of work.

The College’s excellent links with employers could open the door to employment with training in the form of an Apprenticeship or fulltime employment. Health and safety is paramount within the industry and you will be trained in all aspects of this to ensure that you are kept safe throughout the programme and all work placements.

  • Applying Paint Systems by Brush and Roller to Complex Areas 
  • Applying Standard Papers to Walls and Ceilings 
  • Producing Specialist Finishes for Decorative Work  
  • Erecting and Dismantling Access Equipment and Working Platforms 
  • Creating and Applying Colour

September - June

Entry requirements

You must have achieved an appropriate Level 1 vocational qualification and/ or GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above. If you have a grade 3 (D) or below in GCSE English and/ or maths you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your study programme.

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course with a strong emphasis on practical skills.

There are also a number of short theory tests and a multiple choice on-line exam at the end of the course.

You will be assessed through a multiple choice question paper and a practical assignment.

It allows you to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications, the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Painting and Decorating or Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.

You could progress onto an apprenticeship programme if you have an employer where you would be paid for working and still attend College for one day per week.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Explore Construction

Construction students will have the opportunity to work in state of the art workshops, and have access to a real life outdoor construction site. This realistic work environment allows students to gain practical experience in constructing a single story dwelling which is built from foundations up to the roof.
