Overview

This course is designed for students who are interested in entering the construction sector as a painter and decorator. You will develop a good system of work to enable you to work efficiently and safely in today’s competitive market putting you on the right path to success from your very first day.

The course has a range of exciting content where you will have the opportunity to learn and gain the skills necessary to produce work to a high standard. You will learn how to protect the work area and work in a professional safe manner producing work that is pleasing to the eye.

You will be shown how to hang a range of wallpapers as well as all other traditional aspects of painting and decorating. Some learners from the course will be chosen to represent the college at local and national skills competitions.

Tutors will support students into real life work placements that will help you to develop your understanding of what the industry is about whilst preparing you for the world of work.

The College’s excellent links with employers could open the door to employment with training in the form of an apprenticeship or full time employment. Health and safety is paramount within the industry and you will be trained in all aspects of this to ensure that you are kept safe throughout the programme and all work placements.

  • Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication 
  • Erecting and Dismantling Access Equipment and Working Platforms 
  • Preparing Surfaces for Decoration 
  • Applying Paint Systems by Brush and Roller to non-complex areas 
  • Applying Foundation and Plain Papers 
  • Producing Specialist Decorative Finishes 

September - June

Entry requirements

You must have achieved an appropriate Entry Level vocational qualification and/ or GCSEs at grade 2-1 (E-F) or above including Maths, English and Science. If you have a grade 3 (D) or below in GCSE English and/ or maths you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your study programme.

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course with a strong emphasis on practical skills.

There are also a number of short theory tests and a multiple choice on-line exam at the end of the course.

You will be assessed through a multiple choice question paper and a practical assignment.

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the Level 2 Diploma.

You could progress onto an apprenticeship programme if you have an employer where you would be paid for working and still attend college for one day per week.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into further education.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

Explore Construction

Construction students will have the opportunity to work in state of the art workshops, and have access to a real life outdoor construction site. This realistic work environment allows students to gain practical experience in constructing a single story dwelling which is built from foundations up to the roof.
