The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is a professional teacher education programme that will qualify you to teach in the post-compulsory education and training sector. This includes further education colleges, adult and community settings and training providers.

The qualification is open to those with honours degrees, 2:2 or higher in a relevant subject. The course is designed to meet the ETF Professional Standards and will equip you with a toolkit to teach adults and young people. If you hold a 3rd class degree or a Level 3 qualification you will need to apply to study the Certificate in Education.

Two days per week.


You must have achieved an honours degree, 2:2 or higher in a relevant subject and GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent in English.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS check) from the last three years is required, from the point of enrolment.

You must also have had a teaching practice placement that offers you a minimum of 100 hours over the course of one year.

A wide range of teaching and learning strategies are used including interactive teaching, lecturers, seminars, workshops, tutorials, group activities, reflective practice, e-learning sessions and self directed learning.

You are assessed by a combination of written assessments, reflective teaching journals, teaching portfolios, and observations of your teaching practice.

At the end of the year there is a compulsory (assessed) student conference where you work with fellow subject specialists. These two days are compulsory. If you are already in employment you must make arrangements to attend.

Fees payable direct to Middlesbrough College, £5,000 per year.
