OVERVIEW

Building on a firm academic underpinning in sports science, sports therapy and exercise principles, the programme provides students with a skills-set to succeed as a graduate professional in the vocational therapy and rehabilitation environment, as well as the ability to self-direct and develop professionally.

The programme also reflects the current demands and requirements of employers and customers in the market place. This is evidenced in the diverse approach to the modules on the programme which is designed to equip the modern day musculoskeletal therapist with the skills needed to practice in both sport and the private sector.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The most popular (and directly relevant) entry qualifications is the Fd Sports Therapy with Rehabilitation. Other Fd injury management or related discipline programmes would be considered providing the learning outcomes are compatible. Where there is a shortfall of clinical skills that can be met through additional training and assessment then attendance at a summer school will be required at a nominal cost (circa £100) where skills assessment and training will take place at Level 5 marking criteria.

Non-standard qualifications in a related discipline may be considered together with the need to demonstrate the academic rigour required to study at Level 5 (for example, an evidence based case study that demonstrates clinical reasoning and includes a review of literature). Applicants must also be able to demonstrate industry experience and enthusiasm at interview.

Due to the demands for accumulated clinical hours in some accredited programmes that the course may apply for recognition with in the future, it may not be possible to obtain registration with these bodies if the professional placement hours have not been met.

In all cases successful candidates require qualifications in English language and mathematics to at least GCSE grade 4 (C) level or have demonstrated adequate skills and competencies in an interview.

There is a mixture of teaching and learning methods, from lectures, seminars, practical workshops, field-based expeditions, research workshops, online learning to tutorials.

You will be assessed in a range of formats, from multiple choice exams to essays, reports, practical examinations, presentations, portfolios, projects and session delivery.

The course is designed with employability of the students in mind.

It offers the ability to obtain a licence to practice with numerous regulatory bodies, such as the Sports Therapy Organisation or the Federation of Holistic Therapists or other professional bodies as the course may apply for accreditation with in the future.

The course can offer further qualifications in the form of L3 Sports Massage; L4 Sports Massage Therapy; L2 Fitness Instruction, L3 Personal Training (normally awarded at levels 4 and 5) and L3 Exercise Referral.

The entire course (Fd + BSc (Hons) top-up) has been mapped to the British Orthopaedic Association’s Trauma and Orthopaedic Undergraduate Syllabus for Medical Students, in order to align expectations in the wider NHS musculoskeletal provision.

The entire course (Fd + BSc (Hons) top-up) has been mapped to the requirements of major providers of sports therapy and rehabilitation accredited programmes.

The range of modules offering a vast array of skills and competencies will enhance the student’s employability prospects.

The College has a new therapy suite and has invested in vocationally relevant equipment, which compliments the course delivery and the student’s readiness for industry.

The College has strong links with the recreational sports industry, where previous students have successfully gained employment.

Fees payable directly to Middlesbrough College, £8,500 per year.
