College Raises £500 for Haiti Appeal
Thursday, February 11, 2010

A cheque for £500 has been sent from the College to the Save the Children Haiti appeal, following our recent College-wide collection.

Rosemary Smith, a Director of Programmes at the College, was moved by the plight of the victims of the earthquake whilst watching the television one evening. She immediately vowed to raise funds to help the people affected.

The next day she found that other staff and students felt the same, and soon a collection was under-way.
The staff, students and visitors to the College have shown their generosity to help people many thousands of miles away, in a different country. The people of Haiti have suffered terrible loss – many have lost relatives, many have lost homes, all have been affected by what has happened. We hope that the funds raised at Middlesbrough College will be put to good use to relieve the suffering and hardship being experienced in Haiti.

Rosemary is delighted that the appeal has been so successful.

The Haiti earthquake occurred on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. It was followed by a number of after-shocks. An estimated three million people were affected by the earthquake. The Haitian Government stated on 10 February 2010 that 230,000 people had been identified as dead and an estimated 300,000 injured had been treated. They also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. On 22 January the United Nations noted that the emergency phase of the relief operation was drawing to a close, and on the following day the Haitian government officially called off the search for survivors. The work of the aid agencies is now focused on helping those who have suffered loss, and helping people to re-build their shattered lives.
