Learners Get Fired Up
08 February 2010

ApprenticeshipsStudents from the two departments met up as part of Apprenticeship Week at Middlesbrough College.

The event was organised to raise awareness of the varied apprenticeships available at the Middlehaven campus.

The hairdressers swapped straightening irons for high temperature metal-melting torches when they were given a tour of the welding department.

And the welders couldn’t resist trying out the styling scissors when they were shown around the spa and salon areas.

The two groups of students - aged 16 to 19 – exchanged details about the training they are doing, the salaries they expect to earn once qualified, and, in true teenage style, chatted about how they spend their social time.

The event was arranged by Nicola Templeman, employer responsiveness coordinator in hairdressing, beauty and complementary therapies.Nicola said it was a “golden opportunity” for the learners.
“They were able to visit each others working areas within the college, giving them an insight into what is involved in each others day release.
“There are not many other training providers who could offer this opportunity to their learners in Apprenticeship Week,” she added.
The college offers a range of apprenticeships including beauty, business administration, plastering, bricklaying, hairdressing, plumbing, welding, and vehicle maintenance.
