Barbados – Peru – Antigua – Florida…it’s all just part of the job for a former Middlesbrough College student who’s now flying the world for a living.
Samantha Mason, 20, from Ingleby has snapped up a coveted job as a member of the cabin crew after studying Aviation at the college, followed by gaining a degree with distinction in travel and tourism at Teesside University.
She said: “After I did my BTEC in Aviation at the college I got a job working as a passenger service agent at Durham Tees Valley Airport, and stayed there for two years."
“I’ve also completed a two-year foundation degree at the university, and I’m now working as a member of the cabin crew for BA flying out of Gatwick.”
It’s an exotic life for the former student, whose first flights after completing BA training have included destinations in the Caribbean, South America and the US. And she doesn’t just get to see the airport.
“We had two days in Antigua, and two in Lima, Peru – and if we fly to destinations such as Mali in Mauritius we stay there for six days,” she said.
“It’s tiring but exciting!”
Sam commutes to her BA job from Teesside, and inspired by her days at Middlesbrough College and her groundwork experience at the airport, she’s already looking towards her future.
“Eventually, I’d like to teach,” she said.
“The things I learned at college, such as terminology, really help to put you ahead of the rest when you go for a job. The college now has an aircraft fuselage where students can train, and that sort of real-life feel is very inspiring to young people and gives you ambition.”
